The Canon EOS R8 ILC is an upgraded model of the Canon EOS RP mirrorless camera released by Canon in 2019, which combines small size and lightweight with great performance. It is a full-frame interchangeable lens camera with built-in EVF that is widely used in stills photo shooting and movie capture!

The EOS R8 shares the same small and light body as the RP using the same battery and very similar controls.
The EOS R8 uses a full-frame image sensor, which is great for capturing portraits with shallow depth of field or wide landscapes in great detail with its 24-megapixel sensor.

Canon R8 Image Sensor

The 35mm sensor performs great in low-light environments, capturing clear images with low noise, fully demonstrating the charm of the full frame. Full frame sensors generally perform 1 stop better ISO than APS-C sensors of the same generation.
The continuous shooting speed under the electronic shutter can reach up to 40 frames per second *2 (autofocus/auto exposure tracking), and the second-generation full-pixel dual-core focusing can cover the entire area of the screen, supporting high-precision and high-speed focusing.

Digital IS
Stabilization helps make video footage less jerky and the viewfinder more pleasant to use.

Based on deep learning technology, EOS R8 can intelligently identify various subjects such as humans, animals, and cars, and track them accurately. EOS R8 also has an “automatic” detection and recognition mode, which can automatically detect, identify, and track objects, which is convenient for users with a wide range of shooting subjects. At the same time, when the eyes can be automatically focused, you can set the priority focus on the left eye or the right eye to meet the needs of everyday shooting. EOS R8 can shoot 6K over-sampled high-definition 4K video, full HD 1080P high frame rate short films and standard frame rate long-form video, HDR PQ short films, “SCN” special scene mode, multiple creative filters, and other functions, allowing beginners to easily experience a variety of artistic effects.

Canon R8 Connectivity

The EOS R8 can be connected to a smartphone via Wi-Fi to transmit images or to operate remotely. This can make it easier to take selfies and photos from a better viewing angle. New users who are beginners in photography, as well as users who upgrade to APS-C format cameras, can experience great connectivity from this new camera.
Small, lightweight, and affordable, coupled with basic performance and rich functions that are not inferior to mid-range models, this EOS R8 is not to be missed.

Ergonomic Design

The weather-resistant EOS R8 is sturdily built with a polycarbonate plastic exterior and magnesium-alloy chassis frame, making it very lightweight and rigid to mount the largest Canon R lenses. An ergonomic design allows for easy operation with all the buttons and switches in familiar spots as well as a deep grip for long shooting sessions.

Full review to come later on once we get a hold of the camera.

Do you need IBIS in a camera?

No, the money you save from buying the R8 over the R6ii can be used to buy Canon glass instead. It is nice to have for slow photography but not needed if you frequently take pictures of moving subjects.

Why are there so many 24-megapixel cameras?

The camera industry has settled on 24 megapixels as that is a good compromise for still photography and video capture. 24mp gives sufficient detail for landscape photography and is also a nice number to over-sample 4k video. Using similar megapixel sensors also helps with software processing and storage.

Can the Canon EOS R8 be a USB-powered webcam?

The Canon R8 can be powered through a USB port. With the appropriate power supply, you can use it as a streaming camera/webcam.

Canon the Canon R8 use third-party lenses?

You can use EF third-party lenses on the R8 with a compatible adapter. Third-party R mount lenses are not widely as available since Canon actively blocks manufacturers from building lenses for the R mount.

What is the FPS rate on the R8 using EF lenses with an adapter?

It varies with lenses but there is a reduced shooting speed with servo AF, electronic shutter, and H+ 40fps settings

  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II – 40fps
  • Canon EF 100-400mm II – 40fps
  • Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 – 40fps
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L – 12fps
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 – 12fps

In One-shot AF, all Canon EF lenses give 40fps

Will the Canon R8 work with all EF lenses?

Yes, the Canon R8 will work with all Canon EF lenses using an EF-RF lens adapter. Autofocus and FPS will vary depending on the lens. Third-party lenses are not guaranteed to work since some may not be using the official Canon lens communication protocol.
